“When I look back on where I started, sometimes I can’t believe the opportunities this country has given me. I was raised by a single mother in public housing, and was able to graduate from college, start a business and give back to my community. I want every child to have those same opportunities. It’s why as Mayor of Alexandria, I’m always looking for innovative ways to promote economic growth without leaving anyone behind. ”
Bill Euille is the current mayor of Alexandria and has been a public servant in Northern Virginia for over 40 years. As Mayor, Bill Euille has proven that we can grow the economy without leaving anyone behind.
Bill Euille was raised by a single mother in a public housing project in Alexandria and attended segregated schools. He learned that education was the only way to bring his family out of poverty. Bill graduated from TC Williams High School, earned an academic scholarship to Quinnipiac University, and was the first in his family to graduate from college.
After college, Bill moved back to Northern Virginia and worked his way up from a staff accountant to Chief Financial Officer of a general contracting firm. Bill went on to start his own company and was named “Small Business Person Of The Year” by the US Small Business Administration.
Bill has been active in his community for his entire adult life – working with organizations like the Urban League, NAACP, YMCA, United Way, and Boys and Girls Clubs. Bill served on the Alexandria School Board and City Council before being elected Alexandria’s first African American Mayor in 2003. Bill has been re-elected Mayor three times and continues to love serving his community.
Bill Euille has never forgotten that education was the key to his own success. In 1984, he created the William D Euille Foundation to give back to his community – contributing to job training programs and establishing a scholarship to help minority and underprivileged students go to college. Bill also worked with the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria to provide hundreds of scholarships to local students.
As Mayor, he’s working to make sure every child has access to a quality pre-K education, regardless of income, so they can have a head start in school. Bill oversaw reconstruction of TC Williams High School, and built the first new elementary school in over thirty years – and he created a Safe Streets Program to make sure every child can feel safe walking to and from school.
As Mayor of Alexandria, Bill Euille has found innovative ways to improve the economy without leaving anyone behind. His expansion of the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association and investments in transportation – like Water Taxi service from National Harbor to Old Town and free trolley service on King Street – have helped attract tourism dollars to Virginia. And Bill’s work on the Alexandria Small Business Development Council has helped existing and emerging small businesses grow and thrive.
Just as importantly, Bill Euille has made sure that as the economy grows, we are not sacrificing our diversity or values. Bill worked to turn the housing project where he grew up into the first-of-its-kind mixed income housing development – improving the neighborhood, while preserving affordable housing.
