Bill Euille was raised by a single mother in a public housing project in Alexandria and attended segregated schools. He graduated from TC Williams High School, earned an academic scholarship to Quinnipiac University, and was the first in his family to graduate from college. Bill has never forgotten that education was the key to his own success.
In 1984, he created the William D Euille Foundation to give back to his community – contributing to job training programs and establishing a scholarship to help minority and underprivileged students go to college. Bill also worked with the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria to provide hundreds of scholarships to local students.
As Mayor, Bill Euille has made real improvements in education. He expanded access to pre-K, worked to develop the Children & Youth Master Plan, oversaw reconstruction of TC Williams High School, and built a new elementary school. And Bill created the Safe Streets Program to make sure every child can feel safe walking to and from school.
Alexandria’s crime rate is at the lowest rate in 50 years … and it’s no accident. As Mayor, Bill Euille has expanded community-policing efforts and established a Safe Streets Program, which helps kids get to and from school safely. Bill implemented an anti-gang task force and supported after-school programs and mentoring for at-risk youth. And Bill has worked to expand domestic violence prevention programs in our community.
Alexandria is safer than it has been since 1966 – thanks in large part to Mayor Bill Euille’s commitment to public safety.
Improving Alexandria’s Quality Of Life
Alexandria is a special place to live, work and enjoy life … and it is easy to see how Mayor Bill Euille has made a difference for Alexandria’s quality of life.
Mayor Euille has invested in new parks and recreational spaces, including Parker Gray and Cameron Station. He’s expanded bikeshare and transit options. Mayor Euille even fought to make waterfront developers bring in construction materials by barge, helping keep truck traffic out of Old Town.
As Mayor of Alexandria, Bill Euille has found innovative ways to improve the economy and create new jobs. His expansion of the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association and investments in transportation – like Water Taxi service from National Harbor to Old Town and free trolley service on King Street – have helped attract tourism dollars and grow jobs in Alexandria.
Bill Euille understands that small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. As an entrepreneur himself, Bill Euille ran a small business that employed 25 people – so he understands the challenges business owners face. Bill was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Virginia NAACP and Alexandria Chamber of Commerce; and was named “Small Business Person of the Year” by the US Small Business Administration. Bill worked as a mentor to other minority-owned and women-owned businesses, helping them get off the ground.
As Mayor, Bill Euille has worked with the city’s Small Business Development Council to help emerging and existing small businesses secure the capital they need to grow and thrive.
